Huub Röttgering observeert actieve sterrenstelsels , clusters en grootschalige structuren in het verre heelal om inzicht te krijgen in hun oorsprong en evolutie.
Een belangrijk aandachtspunt is het gebruik van verre radiostelsels om de eigenschappen van deze objecten te bestuderen. Hij heeft grote radio surveys met de Westerbork, VLA en GMRT radiotelescopen uitgevoerd om goede voorbeelden van radiobronnen te definiëren. De radio sterrenstelsels uit deze monsters zijn onderzocht op vrijwel het gehele elektromagnetische spectrum met behulp van zowel de grond als ruimte telescopen om hun gas, stof en stellaire inhoud te karakteriseren. Onlangs zijn studies uitgevoerd met behulp van de ESO-VLT optische telescopen in Chili om proto-clusters te bestuderen die in verband staan met krachtige radio sterrenstelsels.
Andere interessante wetenschappelijke onderwerpen zijn de aard van extreem rode sterrenstelsels, starburst sterrenstelsels, cluster radio halo's en tori van de nabijgelegen actieve galactische kernen.
Röttgering heeft ook interesse in de ontwikkeling van interferometrische technieken. Als PI van het project Development and Commissioning van LOFAR voor de astronomie (DCLA) en als de eerste voorzitter van de Sterrenkunde Research Committee LOFAR's (ARC), speelt Röttgering een leidende rol in de ontwikkeling van LOFAR. Hij is ook betrokken bij de ontwikkeling van optische en infrarood interferometers (MIDI op de VLT interferometer en ESA's Darwin en NASA's TPF ruimte interferometers).
