Alumni dreams #250
Fedi Mejri began his academic journey with a broad interest in politics, economics, and global affairs but was unsure about committing to a single field. The interdisciplinary nature of the BA in International Studies (BAIS) provided the perfect opportunity to explore these interests while preparing for an international career. Additionally, studying in English gave him an advantage in the global job market.
During his time at BA IS, Fedi developed a strong passion for human rights and historical justice. His thesis, “A Tale of Two Countries: A Comparative Study of the Struggle for Indigenous Rights and the Long Road to Reconciliation in Australia and Canada,” examined the parallels between Indigenous rights movements in both countries. This research showcased his ability to critically analyze complex global issues from a comparative perspective.
Beyond academics, Fedi seized opportunities to expand his international experience. He was awarded both the Holland and Lustra+ scholarships, which allowed him to study at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Studying at such a prestigious institution broadened his perspective and strengthened his adaptability in different academic and cultural environments.
Fedi credits BA IS for equipping him with a well-rounded education that has been invaluable in navigating the professional world. He believes that in today’s complex landscape, understanding multiple disciplines is crucial, and BAIS graduates are well-prepared to thrive in diverse fields.
After earning his BA in 2019, Fedi pursued a Master of Science in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam, graduating with distinction. He then worked as a trainee political consultant for the European People’s Party in Brussels, assisting the foreign affairs team with projects related to MENA partnerships. His career path later led him to the United States, where he now serves as a Coordinator for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Maine. In this role, he is dedicated to fostering inclusive environments in academia and beyond.
Looking back, Fedi encourages BAIS students to follow their curiosity and pursue research topics they are passionate about. His journey is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary education, global experiences, and perseverance.
A great inspiration, Fedi
