Research
Research and teaching within the Faculty are assigned to seven institutes. This structure allows each institute to focus optimally on specific areas within the humanities, leading to focused research efforts and teaching programmes in which the unique expertise and perspectives within the institute can be shaped autonomously. The institutes are:
- Academy of Creative and Performing Arts
- Leiden University Centre for Linguistics
- Centre for the Arts in Society
- Leiden Institute for Area Studies
- Institute for History
- Institute for Philosophy
- Netherlands Institute Morocco
Research themes
Within the ‘Languages, cultures and heritage’ knowledge domain, we work on the four face-determining themes included in the faculty strategic plan. With these facial themes, we want to reach the world outside the academy and inform it about what we do and why. The first theme now has a webpage. The four themes are:
- Languages and Cultures of the World
- The construction of Heritage
- People, migration and mobility
- Human-centred AI
Organisation
The Faculty Board is responsible for the management and organisation of the faculty for education and research. The board is supported by the faculty office, which takes care of all matters not directly related to education and research.
Buildings
The faculty is housed in several locations, both in Leiden and The Hague. In Leiden, the Humanities Campus consists of the Arsenaal, Herta Mohr, Johan Huizinga, Lipsius, Matthias de Vrieshof, P.J. Veth and the Reuvens. In The Hague, we are housed in the Schouwburgstraat and Wijnhaven.
Cooperation
The faculty works closely with partners such as the Hogeschool der Kunsten in The Hague, KITLV, IIAS, ASC, Leiden Global, Taalmuseum, Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Japan Museum Sieboldhuis, and Wereldmuseum Leiden (formerly Museum Volkenkunde).
