Completed the study Pharmacy at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands in 1983 with a specialization in Pharmacognosy.  After qualification as Pharmacist in 1984, a PhD was obtained in 1991 at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden, The Netherlands. In the period 1988-1994 several post-doctoral positions were obtained at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden. In 1994-1996 an EC grant was obtained for post-doctoral research at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby, Denmark. In 1997, after working half a year in a Pharmaceutical Industry, a position as visiting professor was obtained at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1998 a permanent position as Professor Adjunto at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro followed and in 1999 an appointment as Professor Titular at the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense was obtained. More than 100 papers were published in international peer-reviewed journals. Takes part in the editorial boards of “The Open Organic Chemistry Journal” and the “Revista Virtual de Química do Rio de Janeiro”. Leader of the research group `Metabolomica’ and responsible for the NMR facility at the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense, equipped with a JEOL Eclipse+ 400 spectrometer. Research interests include besides metabolomics, plant cell biotechnology and phytochemistry.
