Future career orientation
You should think about job perspectives well before the defence of your thesis.
Of all PhD graduates 70% subsequently pursue a career outside academia. Therefore, you should start orientating yourself on the labour market during your PhD track and reflect upon the next steps in your career.
Leiden University offers several courses that provide insight into future career possibilities. In addition, the University has launched a career platform tailored specially to the needs of young researchers. This career platform is free of charge and offers online options, like
- self-reflection tests,
- online courses, and
- inspirational testimonials from alumni.
You can also contact one of the career advisors to get career guidance. Detailed information can be found on the University’s website.
If you aim at a career outside academia, you can also participate in the Professional PhD Program, where you will get the chance to work in an organisation outside the university for a number of months.
