LIACS Tech staff

At LIACS, we recognize the growing need for advanced technical support in research projects and lab education. Increasing student numbers, more and more advanced hardware and infrastructure, new demands around data safety and management, and the complexity of core computer science courses necessitate strong technical know-how. Computer science lab education is labor-intensive and complex. Additionally, there's a growing need to support thesis students and researchers in their research projects and daily work in the form of maintaining and developing software, computer environments, and hardware infrastructure

What do we do?

We provide professional support for research projects, labs  and lab education. This team consists of LIACS scientific programmers, education software engineers, and system and infrastructure operation and development. Our core responsibilities include:

  • infrastructure and hardware (see also REL at rel.liacs.nl), where they develop, document and facilitate the use of compute environments, network infrastructure, and hardware, In addition we are responsibility for operations, maintenance of data center racks, maintenance of systems lab and starting next year also maintenance of student computer labs.
  • educational lab engineering, offering development, deployment and maintenance of lab assignments for courses involving programming, as well as the development of education-related tools (think of autograding, import-export)
  • research engineering, offering software related consultancy, assistance with research via scientific programming, troubleshooting, and data management, all for thesis and PhD students and  other research projects.

How do we work?

The team holds monthly meetings in which activities and projects among the different members are discussed and possibly aligned when needed. Update are announced through email and monthly at the LIACS CCC meeting.

How do I get help?

  1. Identify Your Need: Determine if your request is related to infrastructure, education, or research. If you don’t know, just email the main email address.
  2. Contact the Team: Reach out to the most appropriate team member (or, again, send an email to tech-team@liacs.nl ).

Schedule a Meeting (if needed): Arrange a meeting with the team member or one of the team facilitators to discuss your request and decide on time and resources if the request can be accepted.
