International partner universities

Our collaboration agreements offer both students and staff opportunities to broaden their horizons by spending some time abroad. The agreements also serve as a basis for research projects and other forms of collaboration.

Our faculty has concluded agreements with law faculties across the globe, such as the University of Edinburgh (UK), the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), Monash University (Australia), Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia), the China University of Political Science and Law (China) and Diego Portales University (Chile).

Agreements with European universities fall under the Erasmus programme (including Turkey, excluding the UK and Switzerland). Bilateral agreements have been concluded with universities outside of Europe. Below is a summary of our partners.

Procedure for new collaborations

As we currently have over 80 agreements with foreign universities, we are somewhat hesitant to enter into new agreements. However, new proposals can always be submitted to our Office for International Education by sending an email to a.m.m.van.sandwijk@law.leidenuniv.nl.

When assessing new proposals, we initially consider the following:

• Why do we want to work with this partner?
• How could this collaboration help us?
• Which goals do we want to achieve and how could they be achieved through this collaboration?
• Are there any potential risks associated with the collaboration?

For student exchanges, we also look at whether the foreign partner offers courses taught in English.

In the event of positive advice from the Office for International Education, the proposal will be passed on to the Faculty Board and/or Faculty Council for approval. The Office for International Education handles the administrative processing of agreements.
