We welcome visiting scholars whose research aligns with our diverse areas of expertise.

Our work delves into the legal frameworks protecting privacy and personal data, while exploring the challenges of fundamental rights in the digital age, such as gender, diversity, intersectionality, and digital child safety. We investigate the governance of digital platforms, the legal responses to cybercrime and cybersecurity threats, and the ethical and regulatory questions surrounding robotics, autonomous systems, and human-machine interaction. Additionally, we examine the complexities of artificial intelligence and big data, including issues like algorithmic (in)justice.

Admission Criteria

• Welcoming different academic career stages: Open to PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and academic staff (professors, associate professors, assistant professors, or equivalents).
• High-quality profile: Candidates must demonstrate a strong research profile and high-quality academic work relevant to their career stage. You will be asked to present your research during your visit.
• Law and Tech focus: Preference is given to those closely aligned with our institute’s research interests and those that complement our work.
• Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required. Proof of proficiency may be requested.
• Maximum duration: Due to immigration rules, our stays are restricted to 90 days. There are no exceptions to this rule.
• No financial assistance: visiting scholars are responsible for securing funding.

How to Apply

Applications must be in English and addressed to the eLaw secretariat, Ms. Regina Noort.
Required documents include:

• A motivation/cover letter specifying the planned dates and reasons for applying.
• A research proposal or work program (max. 3 pages) detailing activities and goals, including contributions to our research or educational activities.
• A curriculum vitae, including a list of publications.
• A letter of recommendation/support from a staff member of our Institute or an academic reference from your home institution.
• Proof of funding for the duration of the stay.
• Information about other possible stays at other departments or faculties at Leiden University.
• If you intend to visit Leiden University longer than 90 days, eLaw will not take care of your application.

Application Deadlines:

• For visits in Autumn and Winter (September–March): Apply by March 1.
• For visits in Spring and Summer (March–September): Apply by September 1.

Note: Visits cannot be scheduled in July and August due to limited staff availability.

What We Offer

As a visiting scholar at eLaw, you will benefit from:

• Access to Leiden University’s extensive library resources, including more than 5.2 million books, 44,000 e-journals, and 1 million e-books.
• Office space, subject to availability.
• Opportunities to attend lectures, seminars, and events organized by the Law School.
• Assistance from the Law School’s Service Centre International Staff for immigration, financial, and insurance matters. 

Important: Scholars requiring visas must comply with Dutch government regulations. Visa extensions are not permitted.

Accommodation

Visiting scholars are responsible for arranging their own housing. Options include:

• Applying for housing through the university’s Housing Office. 
• Securing accommodation independently via the private sector.

Expectations from Visiting Scholars

Visiting scholars are expected to:

• Actively participate in the intellectual life of the center.
• Present their work through at least one lecture or seminar.
• Contribute to teaching activities for our students or PhD candidates, where appropriate.

Note on Education

Attendance in student courses is not permitted for visiting scholars. Visits may need to be canceled or postponed if Dutch government measures restrict university access.
