Tessa Verhoef is universitair docent aan het Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS). Ze leidt de Emergent Communication Group en is medeoprichter van het Creative Intelligence Lab (CIL). Haar onderzoek is zeer interdisciplinair en ligt op het snijvlak van taal, cognitie, culturele evolutie en computatie. Daarnaast is ze lid van het interdisciplinaire onderzoeksprogramma Society, Artificial Intelligence and Life Sciences (SAILS).
