Professional experience
Valerio is Assistant Professor of Industrial Ecology at the institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) since February 2020. Prior to joining CML, Valerio worked at PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency in The Hague, where he currently maintains a partial appointment. At PBL, he is responsible for further developing the freshwater part of the policy-support biodiversity assessment model IMAGE-GLOBIO. Valerio holds a PhD in Environmental Science from Radboud University, where he worked on establishing large-scale hydrological and ecological numerical models for global environmental sustainability assessments. Valerio has also enjoyed a global career in both industry and academia. He worked one and a half years at Unilever R&D in the UK and spent time as a visiting scholar at Stanford University’s Natural Capital Project.
Research topic
Valerio’s research interest revolves around understanding environmental trade-offs of renewables in the face of the energy transition. He is currently working on assessing environmental and biodiversity impacts of hydropower and mining. In his work, Valerio uses a mix of data-science and spatial analysis techniques. His research has appeared in high-profile journals, such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and has featured in Dutch newspapers such as de Volkskrant and other international media.
