Harmjan started as a PhD candidate in Industrial Ecology in 2024 with a focus on environmental impacts of mining and recycling of critical raw materials.
Professional experience
Harmjan finished his MSc in Physics in 2019, with a focus on theoretical and particle physics. In his masters’ thesis, he developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) to track the path of charged particles in the drift chamber of a particle collider. Before starting his PhD, Harmjan worked for Randstad, TKP Pensioen and Intel specializing in data science and AI engineering.
Research topic
Harmjan’s research aims to quantify environmental impacts of both primary and secondary sources of critical raw materials. This involves developing material flow analysis (MFA) models for recycling processes, investigating the use of machine learning and AI to augment environmental impact data of mines, and quantifying impacts using life cycle analysis (LCA).
