Sustainable Societies
How do you engage society to stop biodiversity loss? How do you create political and social involvement around climate change? And how do you balance the economic needs of the industry with the negative effects of pollution? If you find these kinds of questions interesting, then this Pre-University Class is for you!
At this moment, there are unprecedented changes in our climate and environment, which are the result of global population growth and (unequally distributed) economic growth. As a consequence, we are seeing climate change, a decline in biodiversity, water shortages, and the loss of fertile land. These issues do not affect everyone equally: less affluent populations and low-income countries are particularly affected. To work effectively towards a more sustainable society, an interdisciplinary approach is essential. Interdisciplinary means that you involve multiple fields of study (disciplines) when addressing an issue. In this Pre-University Class, we do the same. We explore how scientific and social scientific insights and methods can be combined to better understand sustainability challenges.
You will attend lectures from professors in various fields such as ecology, environmental sciences, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and public administration. They will explore how our own diets impact the environment from their respective fields. During these days, you won't just be sitting in a classroom; you will also explore Leiden with your fellow students for various assignments.
This Pre-University class is offered by the new interdisciplinary program, Science for Sustainable Societies.
