Honours Academy

For professionals

Are you a professional and do you want to reap the benefits of the educational experimental garden? Explore the possibilities for ‘mixed classrooms’ here. You also have the opportunity to organise your own education together with the Honours Academy.

Mixed classrooms

Honours education for master's students prepares them for a future after university, both in terms of subject matter and skills. This type of education is therefore also interesting for professionals who want to develop themselves further and look beyond the borders of their field.

As a professional, you therefore have the opportunity to take courses at the Honours Academy in so-called ‘mixed classrooms’, where you are enrolled together with master's students. The teaching is small-scale and you will work with innovative teaching methods.

Participating in a mixed classroom may involve a financial contribution.

Futures Thinking

What does the future look like? Nobody knows, which makes it difficult to prepare for it as a professional. The Master Honours Class 'Futures Thinking' provides you with tools to think about the future in a more structured way.

The applications for 2024-2025 have closed. Questions? Feel free to contact Alicia Slooff, coordinator of Mixed Classrooms at the Honours Academy: b.a.slooff@ha.leidenuniv.nl

Target audience

This course is for professionals interested in Futures Thinking. The tools and ways of working taught in the course can be applied to all disciplines. Think of fields such as education, digital media, international relations and public administration.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you will have:

  • developed a Futures Thinking mindset;
  • used creative skills to contribute to solid analysis of future challenges;
  • learned how to apply the principles of design thinking to problem solving;
  • learned to adapt to changing circumstances, by internalising ways to respond flexibly to change;
  • improved your strategy to deal with uncertainties;
  • built up resilience to future changes.
Programme

The sessions will take place from 13:00-15:00 on the following Fridays:

  • 8 November 2024
    We will provide an overview of the course, an introduction to Futures Thinking, and explain how this methodology can be used both personally and professionally. During this meeting, we will also form groups that will work together to develop a Futures Thinking workshop and strategic plan using a real case study.

  • 15 November 2024 (room 1A.25)
    We will focus on signals and drivers, how to spot these developments and use them to shape the future.

  • 22 November 2024
    The focus is on the first step of Design Thinking, exploring how to use this step to determine the scope of the case.

  • 29 November 2024
    Several Futures Thinking exercises will be conducted and you will examine how the second step of Design Thinking can help generate scenarios.

  • 31 January 2025 or 7 February
    Students and professionals will present part of the workshop and the strategic plan to the rest of the group. The professional only needs to be present at the meeting when their group presents (31 Jan or 7 Feb).
