Which skills do you acquire during your studies?

The three-year bachelor's programme Science for Sustainable Societies provides you with the knowledge, skills and mind-set to analyse complex sustainability challenges, combining and integrating insights from natural and social sciences. Besides academic knowledge and skills, you will also be trained in transferable skills such as collaborating, project management, presenting, programming, data analysis, interviewing, and many more. Your academic and professional abilities prepare you for many different master's programmes and provide you with a great foundation for entering the job market.

Your career prospects

Graduates of this bachelor programme earn the title of Bachelor of Science (BSc) and are eligible for various master's programmes at Leiden University or other universities around the world. Science for Sustainable Societies guarantees entry to the MSc Industrial Ecology (Leiden University and Delft University of Technology) and the MSc Governance of Sustainability (Leiden University).

Once you have successfully completed your master's programme, you will have earned the title of Master of Science (MSc). A master’s degree will increase your chances of finding a job or academic level position.

The Science for Sustainable Societies programme offers a broad range of future employment prospects in areas such as government bodies, NGO’s, universities and research institutes, as well as in the private sector, for instance in consultancy.

During your studies, the Leiden University Career Zone can provide you with professional advice and guidance concerning (international) internships and jobs, courses in career planning and job applications. The faculty has its own career advisor who can advise you regarding employers and alumni contacts. They can assist you in exploring your individual interests and abilities, in doing so guiding you towards the most appropriate internship and job.
