Extra challenge

Are you ready to take on an extra challenge during your bachelor’s programme? You may want to check out options like the Honours College, the Humanities Lab and the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA), that will give you additional depth, intensity and study credits.

Honours College

Are you motivated to take an extra challenge and in doing so, get the most out of your study? If so, you may consider taking part in our Honours College and develop your talents to the full. The Honours College is an extracurricular programme that was specifically designed for bachelor’s students who have the ambition to acquire more knowledge and more experience. In this small-scale programme, you will be given excellent guidance and education, allowing you to discover talents you didn’t know you had. The Honours College will earn you extra credits, as well as a certificate upon completion. As an Honours student you will start in the second half of the first year with an orientation course and you will complete this trajectory at the end of your bachelor’s programme.

As student of the Faculty of Humanities you can attend the Honours College programme of your own faculty. However it is also possible to attend a programme of one of the other faculties.

Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA)

Another option is to combine a bachelor's programme from Leiden University's Humanities Faculty with art courses. The Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA) is a collaborative research institute that combines the strenghts of Leiden University and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. ACPA offers education in the arts: electives, minors, talent programmes Practicum Musicae (PM) and Practicum Artium (PA) and Honours classes. ACPA's electives and subjects focus on music, visual arts and design.

Humanities Lab

Humanities Lab challenges you to cross disciplinary borders when working on topical issues such as climate change, the Internet, war and peace, colonialism, identity, or biotechnology. These issues are too complex to be handled by any one discipline, either from the natural or social sciences, from law, medicine or the humanities.

As a student of the Lab, you will be able to either dive into a subject in more detail or expand your horizons. With different elective topics at hand you will research the differences and similarities between humanities, social and life sciences. You will receive challenging, small-group, intensive instruction from top scholars, experts who have earned their name in education and research.

The programme includes elements like guest lectures, seminars and excursions. For example, you can learn how to make a documentary, design an opinion page or draft a policy document. The Humanities Lab will give you the chance to gain valuable practical experience, which also enhances your regular degree programme.
