Application deadlines
Application is split into two important steps, each with its own deadline.
1. Nomination or pre-application
- Nomination: if you are studying at a partner university and joining us via an exchange or study abroad programme, you must first be nominated by your home university.
- Pre-application: if you are not studying at a partner university and are joining us as an independent fee-paying student, you must first submit a pre-application form.
Deadline for nomination or pre-application
We must receive your nomination (from your home university) or your pre-application form in the following period:
- Fall semester (studies starting in September): between 1 January and 1 March
- Spring semester (studies starting in February): between 15 July and 15 September
- Other start dates: at least 5 months prior to your proposed start date.
After nomination or pre-application
Start preparing the documents you will need for your online application - see required documents. Some might take longer than expected to arrange.
2. Online application
After checking your nomination or pre-application, we will send you an email inviting you to submit an online application. You can expect to receive this email in early March (fall semester applicants) or in September (spring semester applicants).
Deadline for online application
- Fall semester (studies starting in September): 1 April
- Spring semester (studies starting in February): 15 October
- Other start dates: at least 4 months prior to your proposed start date.
Apply early!
You are highly advised to apply as early as possible. Courses have a limited capacity and places are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. If you apply at the last minute, it can be challenging to gain admission to sufficient courses. You will also have less time to arrange important pre-departure practicalities, such as housing.
Late nominations and applications
If you are not able to apply on time due to the nomination process at your home university, ask your coordinator to let us know as soon as possible. Be aware that late nominations/applications can only be considered in exceptional cases and at the discretion of Leiden University.
