Professor Robert Tijssen is hoogleraar Science and Innovation bij het Centrum voor Wetenschaps- en Technologiestudies, een onderdeel van de Faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen van de Universiteit Leiden. Daarnaast is hij in Zuid-Afrika bijzonder hoogleraar aan de Universiteit van Stellenbosch en bestuurslid van het DST-NRF Center of Excellence in Scientometrics and Science, Technology and Innovation Policy.
Hij is research fellow aan zowel de Faculteit Governance and Global Affairs van de Universiteit Leiden als het LDE Center for Frugal Innovation in Africa (een samenwerkingsverband tussen de Universiteit Leiden, Technische Universiteit Delft en Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam). Ook is hij lid van de redactionele adviesraad van het international academische tijdschrift 'Research Evaluation'.
In zijn rol als adviseur kijkt hij naar prestatiemetingen en indicatoren als belangrijke analytische instrumenten. Hij richt zich daarbij onder andere op onderzoeksmanagement vraagstukken met betrekking tot de kwaliteitsborging, beloning en incentive systemen, mechanismen van kennisoverdracht en de commercialisering van onderzoek.
Professor Tijssen is manager en bestuurslide van 'U-Multirank', een online instrument voor wereldwijde hogeronderwijsranking, die wordt ondersteund door de Europese Commissie. Daarnaast zit hij ook in het bestuur van de 'European Network of Indicator Designers'.
Hij werkt ook mee aan het CWTS 'Leiden Ranking' systeem, de 'Innovation Union Scoreboard' van de Europese Commissie, de U21 'Ranking of National Higher Education Systems', en de CWTS 'University-Industry Research Connections Scoreboard', een unieke open-access online informatiebron over onderzoekssamenwerking van particuliere en publieke organisaties met ruim 750 universiteiten.

Onderzoek
Zijn onderzoeksexpertise bevindt zich op het gebied van het verband tussen wetenschap, innovatie en hogeronderwijssystemen. Zijn huidige onderzoeksagenda omvat kwantitatieve studies over samenwerking bij onderzoek, prestatie-indicatoren voor universitaire rankings, universitair onderzoek, de sociaal-economische gevolgen van de wetenschap, de Zuid-Afrikaanse wetenschapssysteem en universitair ontwikkeld inclusieve innovaties in Afrika.
