Peter Bisschop is Hoogleraar Sanskriet en oude culturen van Zuid-Azië aan het Instituut voor Regiostudies. Hij is Sanskritist en cultuurhistoricus van het oude India, met bijzondere belangstelling voor de ontwikkeling van het hindoeïsme en aanverwante tradities. Zijn onderzoek is filologisch van aard; hij maakt edities van Sanskriet teksten op basis van overgeleverde handschriften. Voor zijn onderzoek bestudeert hij niet alleen teksten maar ook materiële cultuur (inscripties, tempels, beelden, etc.). Hij is geïnteresseerd in de ontwikkeling van religieuze teksten in relatie tot hun omgeving. Het Sanskriet heeft een meer dan 3000 jaar lange geschiedenis in grote delen van Zuid- en Zuidoost Azië. Zijn onderzoek bestrijkt daarmee een enorm gebied in tijd en ruimte.
