Liia Kivelä studeerde psychologie aan Universiteit Leiden en haalde daar haar bachelordiploma (cum laude) in 2016. Daarna voltooide ze haar onderzoeksmaster in klinische en gezondheidspsychologie in 2019 (cum laude).
Met een Research Talent grant toegekend door het N.W.O. (Nederlandse Wetenschappelijke Organisatie), begon ze in september 2019 haar PhD traject Suicidale ideatie: Fluctuatiemonitoring met Ecologische momentane beoordeling” samen met Dr. Niki Antypa en Prof. Willem van der Does
