Door mensen geproduceerde geluiden kunnen het zeeleven verstoren. Ik onderzoek hoe deze geluiden het gedrag van dolfijnen en vissen beïnvloeden.
In de laatste decennia is het geluidsniveau in het water toegenomen. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door menselijke activiteiten in en op het water, zoals scheepvaart. Deze toename in geluidsniveau verstoort het zeeleven. Mariene organismen, waaronder dolfijnen en vissen, gebruiken geluid om zich te oriënteren, eten te zoeken, partners te lokken en predatoren waar te nemen. Een toename in geluidsniveau kan ervoor zorgen dat ze belangrijke geluiden niet meer kunnen horen (maskering), maar kan ook zorgen voor afleiding tijdens activiteiten die belangrijk zijn voor hun overleving. Foerageren/jagen en het ontwijken van predatoren zijn beide gedragingen die directe consequenties voor de overleving van een organisme kunnen hebben. Ik onderzoek hoe verschillende aspecten van het jagen en het vermijden van predatoren beïnvloed wordt door verhoogde geluidsniveaus. Hiervoor gebruik ik een combinatie van experimenteel onderzoek, observaties en akoestische modellen.
