Vanessa Newby is an Assistant Professor at Leiden University with the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs - Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) and is the PhD Coordinator at ISGA. Vanessa is President of Women in International Security Netherlands (WIIS-NL), and is also the lead researcher for the Gender and Peace research stream of the Chair of UN Studies in Peace and Justice. Vanessa’s research interests include peacekeeping, peacebuilding, informal institutions, gender and security and the international relations of the Middle East.

Vanessa has a BSc Honours in Psychology from the University of Westminster, in the UK and an MA and PhD in International Relations from Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. Her thesis was completed in 2014 and examined the factors that influence the security environment of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Vanessa’s book ‘Peacekeeping in South Lebanon: Credibility and Local Cooperation’, examines the role of credibility in peacebuilding. Previously Vanessa was a research fellow at the Australian National University and an affiliated scholar with the American University of Beirut. She is an Arabic speaker and has spent over ten years researching in the Middle East. Vanessa’s research interests include peacekeeping, peacebuilding, informal institutions, gender and security and the international relations of the Middle East. She is also the president of Women In International Security (WIIS) The Netherlands.

Vanessa Newby is President of Women in International Security Netherlands (WIIS-NL). Women In International Security (WIIS) is a global organisation dedicated to advancing the leadership and professional development of women in the field of international peace and security. WIIS-Netherlands (WIIS-NL) is an affiliate of WIIS Global. WIIS-NL Members include: professionals, civil servants, academics, NGOs, employees of international bodies and organizations, embassy staff, politicians, students, and interested members of the general public. The Chapter’s base is Leiden University in The Hague.
