Lianne Visser is an assistant professor at the Institute of Public Administration at Leiden University. Her research and teaching focuses on customisation and responsiveness by street-level workers, the changing relationship between street-level and policy departments, and informal and mundane aspects of the work of street-level workers, managers, and policymakers. She also writes about qualitative, ethnographic methods and Practice theory.
Previously, Lianne has worked as a policy and management consultant in social policy. She has a research master's degree in Cultural Anthropology: Sociocultural Transformations and a bachelor's degree (cum laude) in Language and Culture Studies, both from Utrecht University. Lianne has won a Christine Mohrmann Grant for Promising Female PhD of Radboud University in 2018, with which she funded a research stay at Edinburgh University to work with Professor Richard Freeman. Lianne has co-edited a book on informal policy practices called Threads of informality: The making of policy work, which will be published in 2024 at Emerald.
Recently, Lianne has started new research projects on the role of Aldermen in responsive management and on how street-level workers function as policy translators in the delivery of customised services.
