Public Management and Organisation
The Public Management and Organisation department of the Institute of Public Administration focuses on public organisations and the behaviour of the managers and professionals working within them. Our vision is that understanding human behaviour and organisational dynamics is essential for understanding and improving the functioning of government.
We focus on three key areas: the relationship between the structure of public organisations and behaviour, the role of public leadership in influencing behaviour within and around public organisations, and the importance of diversity, representation, and inclusion for effective and responsive public organisations.
By closely collaborating with other academic disciplines and public administration practice, we develop valuable insights into the functioning of public organisations. In this way, we contribute to improving the effectiveness and legitimacy of government. The university-wide expertise centre Leiden Leadership Centre is coordinated from this department.
