Herman Siemens is a Senior University Lecturer at the Institute for Philosophy.
Herman Siemens teaches modern philosophy, with emphasis on the self-understanding of modernity developed in the philosophy of the Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment. His areas of specialization are Nietzsche and post-Nietzschean thought; political philosophy, with an emphasis on power, conflict and law; and aesthetics, with an emphasis on its early modern history (Baumgarten, Kant, Schiller, German Romanticism) and questions of taste, perception and judgement. Since 1998 he has been working together with other Nietzsche scholars on the Nietzsche-Wörterbüch Project, based at the Radboud University of Nijmegen and Leiden, which he currently co-directs and co-edits with Prof. Paul van Tongeren and Prof. Marco Brusotti (TUBerlin / Salento).
He has published widely in his areas of expertise, most recently the monograph Agonal Perspectives on Nietzsche's Philosophy of Critical Transvaluation (de Gruyter 2021). Edited volumes include: Nietzsche, Power and Politics (with Vasti Roodt, de Guyter 2008); Nietzsche, Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics (with Marco Brusotti, Bloomsbury 2017: volume I of the 3 volume set: Nietzsche’s Engagements with Kant and the Kantian Legacy (co-editors: Brussotti M., Siemens, H., Bailey T., Constancio J.); Conflict and Contest in Nietzsche’s Philosophy (with James Pearson, Bloomsbury 2018); European/Supra-European: Cultural Encounters in Nietzsche’s Philosophy (with Brusotti M., McNeal M.J., Schubert C., de Gruyter 2020). At present he is preparing monographs on Nietzsche and Kant as Thinkers of Conflict; Nietzsche and Law; Nietzschean Aesthetics; and Studies in Nietzsche’s Use of Language, a collection of word-studies based on his dictionary work.
Grants and International cooperation
Herman Siemens has also been active in several international research projects and collaborations with universities in Chile, Iceland, Portugal and Italy. He has directed two NWO projects: the Open Competition research programme Between Deliberation and Agonism: Rethinking Conflict and its Relation to Law in Political Philosophy (2011-2016); and the Internationalisation project Towards a political ontology of violence: reality, image and perception (2015-2018, in collaboration with Kingston University, Stellenbosch University, University of Lisbon and Koc University). He was President of the Friedrich Nietzsche Society of Great Britain from 2008-2016 and co-organised the annual conferences in th UK and Germany. He is Research Associate of the University of Pretoria, South Africa; Research member of the Centro de Filosofia da Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal; and Adjunct Professor at the Universidad Diego Portales and co-ordinates the Leiden-UDP PhD Training Programme.
