NWO Free Competition subsidies for Professor I.M. Tieken and Dr H.W. Siemens
Professor Ingrid Tieken (Leiden University Centre for Linguistics, LUCL) and Dr Herman Siemens (Institute for Philosophy) have each been awarded an NWO Free Competition award in the Humanities for their research projects.
The NWO Free Competition in the Humanities subsidy is intended for projects carried out by senior researchers. A programme should comprise at least two sub-projects (financed by NWO) that relate clearly to one another.
Professor Ingrid Tieken
Professor Ingrid Tieken, Professor of Historical Sociolinguistics of English, has been awarded a subsidy for her project entitled: “Bridging the unbridgeable: linguists, prescriptivists and the general public”.

Dr Herman Siemens
Dr Herman Siemens, lecturer in Modern Philosophie, has been awarded a subsidy for his project ''Between Deliberation and Agonism: Rethinking conflict and its relation to law in political philosophy."
The project is divided into three research topics:
1. "Rethinking conflict and its relation to law in contemporary political philosophy"
2. "Re-evaluating conflict: Nietzsche’s ontology of conflict and its implications for agonistic political theory"
3. "Conflict and the cosmopolitan rule of law: Kant, Nietzsche and contemporary cosmopolitan theory"
