Social and Behavioural Sciences
Together we can make an impact
The mission and vision of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences are set out in the Faculty Vision and Strategy Plan 2022-2027. This describes in detail who we are and who we want to be, what we want to do, and how we plan to do it.
Our mission: a positive impact
Conducting leading research and providing innovative and stimulating education in the social sciences and interdisciplinary contexts – that is what we do at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. In so doing, we have a substantial positive impact on society. We ensure that everyone who has knowledge in the field is represented (a broad spectrum of knowledge-producers), and we build enduring relationships with our communities.
Knowledge is the key outcome and goal of our community and is a value in itself. Knowledge gives us fundamentally new insights into our behaviour, culture, and social institutions. Moreover, this knowledge is invaluable for reducing inequality, creating more equitable relationships, strengthening freedom and democracy, and promoting social and technological innovation.
By learning about the latest developments and insights in the social and behavioural sciences, our students are able to develop further and to assume important roles in society, both in the public and private sectors.
Our vision: community
We view ourselves as a knowledge community with an international agenda and network, rooted in Dutch society. We want to be a community based on cooperation between researchers, lecturers, support professionals, students and non-academic partners; we view them all as knowledge creators in their own right. A community that welcomes members from all parts of the world and all walks of life, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, class, political orientation, or ethnic background. A community that values knowledge based on critical thinking, because such knowledge has more potential than that based on dogma or power. A community whose members feel free to pursue their curiosity. A community that recognises that people are diverse, but where each individual is equally respected and valued. In short, a community based on freedom and solidarity.

Motto: Open Science
We can only realise the full potential of the social sciences by ensuring that our community and our knowledge are widely accessible. This requires us to reflect critically on the core assumptions that underpin our scientific theories, methods, and practices. To do so, we must break down any barriers between disciplines and faculties and encourage interdisciplinary exploration and collaboration. Open Science like this is the standard approach for all our work.
