Diversity and inclusion
Diversity and inclusion are core values of Leiden University. Leiden University is committed to being an inclusive community which enables all students and staff to feel valued and respected and to develop their full potential. Here we state the vision of the Mathematical Institute on diversity, equity and inclusion.
Diversity, equity and inclusion at the Mathematical Institute
The mission of the MI is to push the frontiers of scientific knowledge by developing and applying high quality mathematics, while offering a wide range of mathematical training in a friendly and intellectually stimulating environment. Diversity and inclusion are key factors in fulfilling this mission.
Vision
These are our shared values relating to diversity and inclusion within the Leiden University Mathematical Institute:
- Equality & equity - We are inclusive, and we oppose discrimination, creating an environment in which every individual can flourish.
- Legitimacy - Our societal roles in education and research ask that we welcome a diverse staff and student population and research community.
- Creativity - Diversity strengthens creativity and thereby enriches our teaching and research.
- Connection - We strengthen our professional relationships in a department where people from diverse backgrounds and differing perspectives all feel a sense of belonging.
- Opportunities - We attract people from all walks of life and all around the world and we provide equitable opportunities.
We give people equal opportunities to study and/or pursue a career at our institute. We avoid bias and challenge each other when we observe this happening. We acknowledge that individuals might need different support to allow them to fulfil their potential; we aim to accommodate this.
Our research and education are embedded in society. Our education brings knowledge to new generations. As a diverse and inclusive institute we appeal equally to all members of our current and future student population, and we make them feel welcome and at home. Being a more diverse and inclusive institute leads to a broader and more diverse field of research contacts, collaborations, themes and approaches.
Research thrives on creativity and creativity is amplified by diversity and inclusiveness. We promote diversity and inclusion to create an environment in which everyone feels free to give their input. This will generate better, new, and more diverse ideas and allows the institute to better advance science.
We build strong professional relationships within our community. Diverse perspectives and an inclusive environment allow us to support each other, to give each other constructive feedback, and to engage in conversation.
Having a diverse staff and a reputation for inclusiveness will make the institute attractive to a larger group of potential students and colleagues. We aim to have a reputation within the broader scientific community of being an institute where everyone is encouraged and supported to achieve their goals and fulfil their potential.
