Pavement plants citizen science project

The Pavement Plants Citizen Science Project invites citizens to monitor plant species growing around their homes, neighborhoods, or towns. The goal is to collaboratively monitor urban flora, measuring and revealing the species richness and biodiversity of the urban ecosystem. We believe this will lead to new knowledge and insights for both citizens and the scientific community.

Promoting plant awareness and combating plant blindness

Another aim of the project is to foster a deeper interest in plants and to combat plant blindness. The research questions focus on participants' motivations for engaging with the project, as well as their attitudes and knowledge about (pavement) plants. This citizen science project serves as the cornerstone of a PhD project. As part of this, research findings on urban plant communities and citizen science will be published, with proper recognition of the contributions made by citizen scientists.

Accessible and inclusive

The project has been designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind. Participants of all ages are encouraged to take part, whether it’s for a one-time observation or more frequent monitoring. You can follow along with the project via the Hortus newsletter and @stoepplantjes on social media. During the course of the project, all collected monitoring data will be made available as open access for citizens to explore and analyze.
