Hortus botanicus Leiden
Living Botany research group
Besides the Hortus being a beautiful place where visitors can relax and learn more about plants, we also facilitate botanical research. At the botanic garden, our ‘Living Botany’ research group investigates (plant) biodiversity and the relationship between plants and people.
Our research areas
We are actively seeking new collaborations and projects to grow our research group. The living plant collections of the garden house over 15.000 plants from all across the world and they form the dynamic heart of our organization. The botanic garden provides a great space for experiments in semi-controlled outdoor conditions, but we also host studies from other institutes. Our current collaborations are the basis for our research themes and provide further prospects for interdisciplinary research. We are actively developing our own research agenda, focusing on three main research areas:
- Evolution of Biodiversity
- Collection based research
- Nature and society
These themes form our main area of study, but projects often share characteristics from multiple areas of study. We are always open to discuss new projects and willing to host experiments.
