Research project
Integrated life cycle assessment and life cycle costing of concrete recycling in the Netherlands
Integrating life cycle assessment (LCA) with life cycle costing (LCC) offers the opportunity to simultaneously analyze the environmental and economic aspects of product alternatives, for the integration of which a unified computational has been proposed by Heijungs et al. (2013) [1]. The project aims to apply the unified LCA/LCC computational structure to a number of case studies while addressing a number of LCIA, LCC and LCA-LCC methodological issues.

Project description
EU28 currently generates 461 million tons per year of ever more complex construction and demolition waste (C&DW) of which 60 – 70% are end-of-life (EOL) concrete. The EU H2020 HISER project proposes a set of innovative technologies to improve the recovery of the complex C&DW, focusing on the fractions of concrete, bricks (ceramics), gypsum and wood. This project is part of the HISER project, focusing on “Integrated environmental and economic assessment from a life cycle perspective”.
In this project an integrated LCA/LCC case study will be carried out to evaluate the environmental and economic sustainability of the HISER innovative solutions for the recovery of concrete fraction in the Netherlands. The results will be used to support the technological development and the policy recommendations.
Tasks
The LCA/LCC case study will be performed for:
- three major life cycle stages: a) demolition of the building b) recycling of C&D debris and c) use of recycled materials;
- three demolition scenarios;
- two types of end-of-life scenarios;
- applying three methods to align LCA and LCC: a) defining the same system for both; b) simultaneously collecting LCA and LCC data for the foreground systems; c) using the same software to compute LCA and LCC results;
- evaluating LCI-uncertainties for the LCA study by applying the Henriksson et al. (2014) protocol to foreground process data.
