Mmmonk and Henri Pirenne Institute for Medieval Studies (UGent) will host the second edition of Mmmonk school in the autumn of 2023. Mmmonk School offers lessons for advanced beginners about the medieval book. It is an interdisciplinary practice-focused programme about medieval Flemish manuscripts. Six experts introduce the main concepts, skills and methods of their given field of expertise. The lessons are online, free and open for everyone. On 2 december 2023, the symposium 'Materiële cultuur in religieuze instellingen' will take place in the St.-Pietersabdij in Ghent. This symposium is organized by Contactgroep Signum in collaboration with the Henri Pirenne Institute for Medieval Studies of Ghent University.
The volume Vernacular Books and Their Readers in the Early Age of Print (c. 1450–1600), edited by Anna Dlabačová (Leiden University), Andrea van Leerdam (Utrecht University), and John Thompson (Queen’s University, Belfast), explores approaches to study vernacular books and reading practices across Europe in the 15th-16th centuries. Through a shared focus on the material book as an interface between producers and users, the contributors investigate how book producers conceived of their target audiences and how these vernacular books were designed and used. The volume brings contributions on different regions, languages, and book types into dialogue.

In dit boek buigen tien jonge mediëvisten uit Nederland en Vlaanderen zich over enkele hardnekkige mythes over de Middeleeuwen.
For the project ‘Professionals and the People’ Tilburg University is looking for a historian with a PhD with passion for archival research. The postdoc will investigate the administrative culture and the functioning of urban civil servants in the Low Countries during the late Middle Ages and Early Modern period. On 28 September, the Medieval Murder Maps website will be shared publicly for the first time. The makers have used fourteenth-century coroners' rolls to map the homicides in three medieval towns: London, York, and Oxford. These digital maps are interactive and come with podcasts of interesting cases, narrated by a voiceover actor. Maps also include fatal incidents and allow people to filter the murders and incidents by gender, weekday, and weapon. The Map features descriptions of each of the cases, gleaned from original documents, have been translated into modern English.
