Utrecht University Library invites researchers, students and other users of their digital collections to complete a survey about this: what material are you looking for (and can you find it), what functionalities do you use, what do you like and what could be improved? The library uses the suggestions to make its digital offering as accessible and (re)usable as possible.
A workshop is organized at St John's College, Oxford, on September 23-24. The workshop aims to bring together medievalists of all disciplines to discuss the research and teaching of ‘difficult’ or ‘taboo’ topics. The organizers welcome applications from scholars working in any field that demands sensitivity and resilience from researchers, such as (but not limited to): gender, sexual violence, mental health, disability, and race. Abstracts should be sent in by June 9.
On May 30 and 31, a workshop will take place at the Dutch Art Historical Institute in Florence (NIKI). This workshop aims to further our understanding of how late medieval societies reconciled the partially contradictory ideals and expectations of Ecclesia and Iustitia at a collective and individual level, using perspectives coming from art history, literary studies, history and religious scholarship. The workshop can be attended in person and online.
On June 3rd at 10:15, Kay Boers (Utrecht University) will defend his PhD thesis, titled "CIVIS: Rhetoricity, Citizens, and Citizenship in Seventh-Century Hispania." The defense will take place in the Senaatszaal of the Academy Building of Utrecht University (Domplein 29).

On November 8, the annual Medieval Studies Day will take place, organized by the Flemish Medievalist Association, in cooperation with the Henri Pirenne Institute Ghent. This year’s theme is Pe(s)ts to Parchment: Multidisciplinary Research on Animals in the Middle Ages. On the evening of 7 November, there will be a cultural activity. Enrollment starts on June 17.
By virtue of the legacy of prof. Maartje Draak, which is administered by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Celtic Studies section of Utrecht University is able to organise the Maartje Draak Seminars in which international Celticists visit Utrecht for intensive workshops and seminars.
For the third time, the Society for Nobility Studies will present the Virtus Thesis Award for Nobility Studies for the best (Research) Master’s thesis devoted to (an aspect of) the study of the nobility. To be eligible for submission, the thesis must have been produced in completion of an academic Master’s or Research Master’s programme in history or another relevant discipline at a Dutch or Belgian university. The thesis must be written in Dutch, English, French or German and officially completed between 1 September 2018 and 1 September 2020.
