The NVIC and al-Azhar University signed a protocol for cooperation on the 23rd of September 2018. The protocol formalizes cooperation between al-Azhar as the oldest Islamic university and the Dutch and Flemish universities in the scope of humanities and Islamic and Arabic studies. The NVIC will act as the main contact institute in connecting al-Azhar candidates with potential scholarships to pursue their post-graduate studies at Dutch/Flemish universities. The protocol was signed in the presence of Dr. Rudolf de Jong, Director of the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo, Dr. Mohamed al-Mahrasawy, President of al-Azhar University and H.E. Mr Laurens Westhoff, the Netherlands ambassador amongst others.
On the 17th and 18th of September 2018, the workshop Egyptian Riverine Harbours took place for the second time. The workshop is organized by the French, Austrian and Netherlands-Flemish institutes in Cairo and the Leuven Egyptologists. Harco Willems held his lecture on the relation between the antique city of Shemun (Ashmunein/Hermopolis Magna) and the former bed of the Nile in this part of Middle Egypt. Following this workshop, which was meant for a limited audience in 2017 and 2018, a major International Symposium on the same theme will be organized in 2019 in Cairo.
