Extracurricular

Extracurricular activities are a key component of this master's programme.

Master Honours Education

Are you a curious and motivated master’s student? Leiden University's Honours Academy offers various kinds of extracurricular education, ranging from long-running programmes to short-term courses.

Master Honours Classes & Challenges

Would you like to further develop your academic skills and societal awareness? Join one of our Master Honours Classes & Challenges. In a small-scale, interdisciplinary course, you will tackle a complex issue for society or for a specific partner organisation. You will learn about the latest scientific insights concerning the topic and cooperate in a practical setting, together with students from many different backgrounds. There are Master Honours Classes on offer for 5 or 10 EC.

Designing Your Life courses

Do you have questions about the steps you can take to craft your future? Designing Your Life courses can help you tackle these questions by approaching your life and career with design thinking. You’ll brainstorm with classmates, envision multiple possible futures for yourself, and learn to build your way forward. Central to the course is having network conversations with professionals in the field to gain insight into what your future could look like.

During this programme, you will have the opportunity to participate in a number of extracurricular activities organised to enhance your studies, including:

  • A study trip for Law & Finance students to selected financial market players. On previous student trips, we visited the European Central Bank, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), the Single Resolution Board, the European Banking Federation, international law firms such as Jones Day, Ashurst and Clifford Chance, BNP Paribas and Deutsche Börse and the major European Stock Exchange in Frankfurt.
  • FINSTAS, the study association run for and by Leiden University’s financial law students. Membership is open to both international and Dutch students. Members of this assocation can participate in all of the extra-curricular network events organised by FINSTAS.
  • In addition, students may participate in a negotiation game organised by the Hazelhoff Centre for Financial Law. This game simulates the negotiation of a financial transaction and is facilitated by lawyers who work on such transactions in their daily legal practice. By participating in such game, students can practice with situations and arguments which they are likely to experience in their professional career.
