Admission requirements

The Master’s Health, Ageing and Society stimulates interdisciplinary thought. Meaning that motivated students with a broad scale of Bachelor backgrounds will potentially be admitted to the programme.

Entry requirements for students from a Dutch Research University

In the list below, you'll find the eligible Bachelor's degrees that grant access to the Master’s Health, Ageing and Society.

If your Bachelor’s is not on the list below, please read the information below at 'All other Bachelor’s backgrounds'. For further questions of the admission requirements, please contact our study advisor: StudyadvisorHAS@lumc.nl.

Students with the following Bachelor’s degrees are freely admissible:

Students with other Bachelor’s backgrounds than mentioned above are invited to submit a request for admission to the Board of Admissions of the Master’s.

Additional requirement
For students with other backgrounds it is required to submit an application form, stating: why the applicant has chosen this Master’s programme; the applicant’s knowledge of, and experience in biology; the applicant’s knowledge of, and experience with older individuals; and the applicant’s knowledge of and experience with management; the applicant’s experience with research and the applicant’s future career perspectives.

Students with Bachelor of a Dutch University of Applied Science (HBO; within the health domain) are invited to submit a request for admission to the Board of Admissions of the Master’s.

Additional requirement
For students with a Bachelor of a Dutch University of Applied Science it is required to submit an application form, stating:

  • Why the applicant has chosen this Master’s programme;
  • The applicant’s knowledge of, and experience in biology;
  • The applicant’s knowledge of, and experience with older individuals;
  • The applicant’s knowledge of and experience with management;
  • The applicant’s experience with research;
  • The applicant’s future career perspectives.

And successfully complete two bridging modules plus and interview with two  members of the board of admission.

The bridging modules are obligatory for students who would like to start the Master's Health, Ageing and Society and have acquired a Bachelor of a Dutch University of Applied Science (HBO; within the health domain). The Board of Admissions will provide you two e-learning modules about biology and research methods (equivalent to 1 EC per e-learning) and will then conduct an interview to review the students’ admission knowledge. During the interview two  members of the board of admission will discuss skills, understanding and knowledge of human biological mechanisms, the human body and research methods.

Language requirements
Please note for admission to the programme, sufficient command of the English language is required (English tests accepted (specified below), results may not be more than two years old). For Dutch students, knowledge of the English language at VWO level is required.

Entry requirements for students with non-Dutch diplomas

In the menu below, you'll find the requirements for international students:

Students with non-Dutch diplomas are invited to submit a request for admission to the Board of Admissions of Health, Ageing and Society. Students may submit a request for admission in the Health, Ageing and Society programme with a Bachelor’s degree which preferably shows sufficient skills, understanding and knowledge of human biological mechanisms and the human body. 

Additional requirements:

  • Grade Point Average of at least 6.0 Dutch grading system (or international equivalent) at the submission deadline;
  • Application form; stating why the applicant has chosen this master’s programme; the degree of the applicant; the applicant’s knowledge of, and experience in biology; the applicant’s knowledge of, and experience with older individuals; and the applicant’s knowledge of and experience with management and the applicant’s experience with research and the applicant’s future career perspectives and the applicant’s future career perspectives.

Language requirements*:

  • Sufficient level of English is required for international students*, proven by one of the following qualifications:
  • IELTS, each test component must score a minimum of 6.0; with an average score of at least 6.5;
  • TOEFL, overall score 90 (internet based), each test component must score a minimum of 20  (internet based);
  • Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE) or C1 Advanced (CAE) 180, Cambridge component score 169

*This requirement does not apply if you have one of the following diplomas or meet the criteria of:

  • An International Baccalaureate diploma from a programme taught in English (or an IB diploma with English A)
  • A diploma of secondary or higher education completed in Australia, Canada (with the exception of French taught programmes in Canada), Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States or South Africa
  • A diploma of an English-taught university degree programme completed at a Dutch research university
  • A pre-university education (VWO) diploma

Bridging modules
Please note: There are two e-learnings available to compensate for in biology and research methods. Admitted students will have the opportunity to follow these E-learnings as preparation for the start (equivalent to 1 ECTS per e-learning) of the Health, Ageing and Society programme.

The following requirements apply*: 

  • IELTS Academic modules only, on paper or on computer: 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 for each separate component score.
    • We do not accept IELTS Academic online.
    • We do not accept IELTS General Training, IELTS Indicator, or IELTS One Skill Retake
  • TOEFL internet based: 90 overall, with at least 20 for each separate component.
    • We are not able to accept The TOEFL IBT Home Edition™, except in the following situation only:
      You are unable to take an in-person test on location because test centres are inaccessible or closed due to unsafe conditions in a country.
    • We do not accept the following types of test: TOEFL My Best™ scores (multiple test scores combined), TOEFL Essentials™  or institutional tests such as ITP.
  • Cambridge English Exam C2 Proficiency, or C1 Advanced (180), with a minimum score of 169 for each separate component.

Note that English test results may not be more than two years old and must be obtained in one single test.

*You do not have to submit an English proficiency test if you have completed your education in the USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada (except French-taught programmes in Canada) Singapore, South-Africa or Malta; or if you have obtained an English-taught International Baccalaureate™; or if you have completed a Dutch VWO diploma or an English-taught bachelor at a Dutch research university or (for September intake) 
a diploma of an English-taught higher professional education (hbo) programme completed at a Dutch university of applied sciences
