Economie van de Publieke Sector (MSc)

Economie van de Publieke Sector (Public Sector Economics) is a new Master’s programme at Leiden Law School and will only be offered in Dutch.

The new Master’s programme in Public Sector Economics (MSc Economics) prepares you to become the policy economist of the future. The programme enables you to bridge the gap between economic theories, scientific methods, the functioning of Dutch institutions and policy processes, as well as current societal challenges. This master’s programme in Economics is unique in that it is taught entirely in Dutch and focuses on Dutch public policy.

This Master of Science (MSc) programme starts in September 2025 at Leiden University in The Hague. It addresses the skills gap between what current economics graduates offer and the needs of employers in the (semi-)public sector, such as ministries and policy agencies.

The programme is based in The Hague, the public policy heart of the Netherlands, providing excellent networking opportunities with not only ministries, planning bureaus, political parties and international organisations, but also the business sector.

During this Master’s programme, you will develop strong analytical skills and practise other key competences for modern policy economists in the Netherlands, such as working-in-teams and clear communication in Dutch. The programme also integrates cutting-edge research techniques into its teaching. The curriculum focuses on three major themes that shape current economic policies: inequality, climate change, and technology. You can choose to specialise in one of these areas.
