Project summary
Our student exchange partnership with the American University in Cairo (AUC), one of the oldest liberal arts institutions in the region, makes a major contribution to our internationalisation strategy. It increases the diversity of our classrooms through the presence of students from Cairo, and by providing a high-quality educational experience for our students as a study abroad destination.
Studying in Cairo provides Leiden students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in Egyptian culture and society while learning about the region’s most pressing issues. The city blends the cultures of the Middle East, Africa and the Mediterranean and has long served as the cultural, political and social capital of the Arab region. Cooperation with AUC allows for reciprocal exchange and offers a wide scope of course options for students from both universities.
Commitment to international education
AUC’s mission is to offer high-level international education to AUC students, to maximize their international exposure and experience, and to incorporate the global dimension into AUC by expanding its walls and offering students a first-hand experience of the broader global community. The American University in Cairo is proud to be part of a longstanding and deep commitment to international education to help students become active leaders and conscientious members of an increasingly global society in a world of greater economic integration and political and social interdependence.
Talented researchers
AUC aims to provide students with a unique opportunity to study in a foreign country for academic credits. The goal is to provide students with an international educational experience, which gives them a valuable advantage, both in their personal growth and in their career prospects. It also allows students to better shape their academic careers and to differentiate their qualifications. Leiden University enjoys an excellent reputation as a research university, allowing students to develop new academic perspectives.
From Egyptology to gender studies
AUC enjoys a variety of internationally accredited disciplines and programmes taught in English by highly qualified faculty members, with subjects ranging from Sociology, Egyptology, and Gender and Women’s Studies, to Middle Eastern Studies and Comparative Religion. This makes it an invaluable exchange destination for Leiden students from programmes such as Middle Eastern Studies, Political Science, International Relations, International Studies, Urban Studies, African Studies, Anthropology and Archaeology.
