Why change is needed

In our current system, many tasks and roles are undervalued.

Academia in Motion is working towards an open knowledge community, closely connected to society, that recognises and rewards everyone’s contribution to our strategic goals.

We do this not alone but together with national and global partners.

Think, for example, of UNESCO's Recommendation on Open Science (signed by 193 countries), Open Science and Recognition & Rewards programmes in the Netherlands, and calls such as the Barcelona Declaration (signed by Leiden University).

This fits with the bigger societal picture, one in which:

  • Society is becoming more complex, and technology is advancing quickly.
  • There are concerns about research not being open enough and the public not having access to the findings.
  • People are turning to universities for answers to big global challenges.

As an open knowledge community, we will be ideally placed to design the most innovative and effective solutions for the challenges that affect us all and to equip our students with the skills they need to contribute to our knowledge society, as citizens, professionals and future academics.

Let's set Academia in Motion!
