Working at Leiden Science

Our faculty is a welcoming and open meeting place for all, filled with inspiration, knowledge sharing and opportunities for development. We are a connected and inclusive community, where everyone is welcome.

We encourage everyone to work together openly and pleasantly in a safe study and working atmosphere. We want to be a place where people thrive and promote a respectful and collaborative environment where both students and staff feel safe and valued.

My job rocks: Christiane Luttikhuizen

She works four days a week as a project manager at LIACS and trains six days a week with the Dutch Para Climbing team. Christiane Luttikhuizen balances her role at the Faculty of Science with competing at a high level in climbing.

‘When I’m at work, I don’t think about sports, and vice versa. The combination helps me keep things in perspective, and that’s why it feels like a healthy balance. It means I can fully commit to both work and climbing.’

My job rocks: Maaike Barkema

A strategic plan that resonates with employees. Tha’ how Maaike Barkema describes her work as strategic secretary. Her task? Ensuring that the strategic plan is actually put into practice. ‘My work is like a puzzle: I bring the right people together and make sure all the pieces fall into place.’

‘If we organise our processes smarter, workload goes down and job satisfaction goes up.’

My job rocks: Thijs Bosker

Sharing his passion for sustainability with students—that’s what Thijs Bosker enjoys most about his work. ‘Everyone can make a difference in their own way.’

‘You can’t solve major environmental challenges by just working in a lab or developing a new climate model. It has to happen through collaboration across a wide range of disciplines. That’s what we’ll be bringing together in the new bachelor’s programme Science for Sustainable Societies.’
