The Leiden Law School and the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies (the Grotius Centre) have traditionally and since long been known for their expertise in International Institutional Law The Grotius Centre has a strong track record in both teaching and research in the field of international institutional law. We are looking for a Full Professor to be appointed to the Schermers Chair in International Institution Law (0,2 fte) to conduct research and teaching in the field of international institutional law.

What you will do
The chair will be a part-time position (0.2 FTE). The chair holder will

  • develop and deliver core courses in the Advanced and Regular LLM programmes in international institutional law;
  • conduct high-level research in international institutional law and sustain a strong publication record in Dutch and international scientific journals and books ;
  • supervise PhD students in in international institutional law ;
  • strengthen research in the field of the chair through collaboration with other researchers within the Faculty of Law and within the University ;
  • represent the Grotius Center for International Legal Studies in relevant national and international scientific forums.

The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies
The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies at Leiden Law School (‘the Centre’) is a leading academic institution in the field of international law, which is focused on high-level research, education and training in public international law and global justice. The Centre is part of the Faculty of Law of Leiden University, the oldest University in The Netherlands. It is one Centre in two cities, with homes in Leiden and The Hague. It hosts several international research projects, leading scientific journals (e.g., Leiden Journal of International Law), a regular and two advanced LLM programmes, the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition, the IBA ICC Moot Court Competition, as well as high-quality training courses, Summer Schools, lectures series, seminars and conferences.
Research within the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies is part of the Research Programme ‘Exploring the Frontiers of International Law’.

What you bring (fixed heading – no adjustments possible)
In this team, we are looking for someone who can work independently. Every job is different, so in the beginning we will devote attention to your onboarding. If some of the work activities are new to you, we will look together at what you need, and draw up a development plan. This position is a good fit for you if you recognise yourself in the following:

  • You have a PhD in the field of international institutional law or public international law ;
  • You are an expert in international institutional law and public international law in general, and actively participate in the academic and social debate (in the Netherlands/internationally) in the field of international institutional law;
  • You have published and presented widely and internationally in the field of international institutional law;
  • You have excellent command of English ; non-Dutch speaking candidates should be prepared to acquire a very good passive knowledge of the Dutch language;
  • You have national and/or international educational and work experience;
  • You are an inspiring lecturer (ideally holding the Basic Teaching Qualification or equivalent), with a proven track record in the field of teaching at bachelor, master and post-academic level;
  • You have experience in recruiting new Ph.D. talent and in successfully supervising PHD research;
  • You are a team player, and you have a high sense of initiative, leadership qualities and proven ability to seek and obtain research funding;

We also offer:

  • An employment contract for the duration of one year with a view to permanent employment. This contract falls under the CLA of Dutch Universities;
  • A salary of a minimum of € 6.648 and a maximum of € 9.680 gross per month, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours) (Scale H2); The position is an 0,2 appointment.
  • A holiday allowance (8%), an end-of-year bonus (8,3%), and an attractive pension scheme at ABP;
  • Flexible working hours: as a standard, you are entitled to a minimum of 29 leave days on the basis of a full-time working week of 38 hours; you can also save for extra leave, for example by working 40 hours a week, and in this way accrue an extra 96 leave hours, or exchange 96 leave hours for a 36-hour week.
  • Lots of options when it comes to secondary employment conditions.. Within our terms of employment individual choices model, you can exchange leave days and/or salary for benefits such as an advantageous sports subscription or bicycle scheme, and we also offer child-care options;
  • A home-working allowance (day and internet allowance) and attention for good workplaces. The University will also provide you with a laptop.
