Data science (DS) is concerned with the extraction of useful knowledge from large, complex data sets. Drawing on the fields of machine learning, data mining, databases, and visualization, it provides critical support to decision-makers in many professions, allowing them to make decisions based on precise situation awareness. Applications include business intelligence, the detection of anomalies in patterns of behavior, and analysis of services in cloud computing. Artificial intelligence (AI) is an even broader field about the automation or simulation of human intelligence.
We are about to enter a “golden age” where these fields will revolutionize nearly every aspect of human endeavor, from natural resources to manufacturing to human health and the rest of the services sector. The development of appropriate educational programs to build skills in data science and AI, and in particular, bringing together European experts together with Asian experts will contribute to regional success in the race to transform national economies from commodity-based to knowledge-based economies. This proposal focuses on MSc level training, providing advanced courses and guidance in developing research skills necessary to develop innovative new data-driven technologies. To widen the reach of our efforts and develop appropriate synergies with the business sector, besides full-time MSc courses, we will develop professional education courses that could immediately increase a company’s capability for data science and AI R&D while also providing trainees with early credit towards the full MSc degree program.
