Chapter abstract:
Caribbean communities have been exposed to the challenges of water ever since the occupation of the archipelago 7500 years ago. Alternating periods of drought and extremely wet climatic conditions, the threat of tropical storms, hurricanes, major wave events like tsunamis, and the continuous menace of sea level fluctuations have led the indigenous people of the Caribbean to adapt their insular way of life. Today these challenges, in addition to other catastrophes and the risk of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, alongside human interferences (e.g., construction activities, sand mining and looting) from serious threats to catastrophic events and the responses from the indigenous communities in terms of water management by means of a number of archaeological case studies across the Caribbean.
