Tineke Abma is hoogleraar Ouderenparticipatie bij de afdeling Public Health en Eerstelijnsgeneeskunde (PHEG) van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC). Daarnaast is zij directeur-bestuurder van kennisinstituut Leyden Academy on Vitality and Ageing. Tineke Abma is tevens lid van de wetenschappelijke raad van Instituut GAK en voorzitter van stichting Waardenwerk.

Ouderenparticipatie
De leerstoel Ouderenparticipatie is gevestigd bij de afdeling Public Health en Eerstelijnsgeneeskunde van het LUMC. Tineke Abma leidt onderzoek ter versterking van de positie van ouderen en oudere patiënten in zorg, beleid en wetenschappelijk onderzoek. De inclusie en maatschappelijke participatie van mensen in een kwetsbare situatie hebben haar bijzondere aandacht.
Tineke Abma pleit voor een benadering van participatie vanuit verbondenheid en wederzijdse afhankelijkheid: iedereen wil immers meedoen, zichzelf kunnen zijn en erbij horen. Met haar participatief actieonderzoek wil zij bijdragen aan de participatie en kwaliteit van leven van cliënten en ouderen, opdat zij een volwaardige positie innemen in onze samenleving en zodat voorzieningen, waaronder zorg en welzijn, beter aansluiten op hun behoeften en wensen. Dialoog en deliberatie, tussen (oudere) patiënten onderling en met andere partijen zoals onderzoekers en zorgprofessionals, zijn cruciaal om inzicht te krijgen in wat er voor mensen echt toe doet.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Tineke Abma is opgeleid als verpleegkundige en promoveerde in 1996 in Beleid en Management Gezondheidszorg aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. Van 2002 tot 2009 werkte ze als associate professor aan de Universiteit van Maastricht, waarna ze de overstap maakte naar Amsterdam UMC (VUmc) waar zij werd benoemd tot bijzonder hoogleraar Cliëntenparticipatie in de ouderenzorg. Van september 2010 tot november 2021 was zij in Amsterdam hoogleraar Participatie & Diversiteit op de afdeling Ethiek, Recht en Humaniora. Samen met Cliëntenbelang Amsterdam richtte zij in 2014 het Centrum voor Cliëntervaringen op. Zij is ook initiatiefnemer van de School of Participation. Sinds december 2019 geeft zij als directeur-bestuurder leiding aan kennisinstituut Leyden Academy on Vitality and Ageing.
Tineke Abma begeleidde meer dan dertig promoties en zij publiceerde, naast meer dan 150 internationale wetenschappelijke artikelen (H-index 40), onder meer de uitgaven Zeggenschap in wetenschap (2007), Herinneringen en dromen van zeggenschap. Cliëntenparticipatie in de ouderenzorg (2010) en het internationale handboek Participatory Research for Health and Social Well-Being (2019). Haar werk werd in 2007 onderscheiden met de Crebolder Award for Societal Impact. In 2013 ontving zij een prestigieus ASPASIA-laureaat vanuit NWO.
