Thijs van Osch is hoogleraar Radiologie en in het bijzonder Experimentele Cerebrovasculaire Beeldvorming en vice-director van het C.J. Gorter Center of high field MRI. In 2016 heeft hij de NWO VICI vernieuwingsimpuls “Breaking through spatial, temporal and physiological boundaries in brain imaging” ontvangen.
Cerebrovasculaire Beeldvorming
De hersenen hebben een zeer beperkte opslagcapaciteit van zuurstof en voedingsstoffen en zijn dus geheel afhankelijk van een voldoende en continue doorbloeding om de toevoer hiervan te garanderen. Van veel hersenziektes, zoals dementie, is het bekend dat aandoeningen aan de hersenvaten een belangrijk onderdeel van het ziekteproces vormen. Om de ernst van dergelijke hersenziektes goed en in een vroeg stadium te kunnen meten en vooral ook om de invloed van een behandeling vast te kunnen stellen, is het daarom van groot belang om te weten of de hersendoorbloeding op peil is en wat de gezondheid van de hersenvaten is. Dit is op dit moment nog moeilijk te meten, maar door nieuwe technieken te ontwikkelen op de MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) wil Thijs van Osch dit op een niet-invasieve wijze mogelijk maken.
Hoewel de meeste hersenvaatjes te klein zijn om individueel in beeld te brengen, kunnen we met MRI wel de doorbloeding van het hersenweefsel meten door het water in het bloed magnetisch te labelen en af te beelden waar dit label terecht komt. Dit is een compleet veilige en niet-invasieve techniek. Door deze techniek verder uit te bouwen, wil Thijs van Osch het mogelijk maken om ook andere eigenschappen van de hersenfysiologie (zoals de oxygenatie), alsmede de gezondheid van de kleinste hersenvaatjes te kunnen meten (gemiddeld over een pixel met een typische resolutie van 3x3x3 mm). Daarnaast wilt hij deze technieken klinisch valideren en toepassen. Ook wil hij onderzoeken hoe de hersendoorbloeding wordt beïnvloedt door andere processen en organen in het menselijk lichaam, zoals bijvoorbeeld de hartfunctie en de elasticiteit van de grote toevoerende vaten.
Dit onderzoek sluit aan bij de Nationale Wetenschapsagenda routes: “NeuroLabNL”, “Personalised medicine”, en “Meten en detecteren: altijd, alles en overal”.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Thijs van Osch heeft Technische Natuurkunde gestudeerd aan de Universiteit Twente, waarna hij een promotieonderzoek heeft gedaan bij het Image Sciences Institute van het UMC Utrecht. Hij is op 20 november 2002 gepromoveerd op het proefschrift “Evaluation of cerebral hemodynamiscs by quantititative perfusion MRI”. In 2004 is hij in het LUMC aangesteld en is hij met name onderzoek gaan doen naar niet-invasieve MRI methoden om de hersendoorbloeding te meten. Daarnaast was hij technisch project-leider van de installatie van een whole body 7 Tesla MRI scanner in 2007. In 2018 is hij aangesteld als hoogleraar en in 2019 zal hij zijn oratie houden.
