Sean is a graduate of the University of York, UK, where he studied chemistry, specialising in biological and medicinal chemistry. During his bachelors degree, he gained valuable experience in medicinal chemistry research, conducting a project on the synthesis of novel xanthine oxidase inhibitors. As part of his integrated master's degree program, Sean spent a year as a visiting researcher at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where he conducted an independent research project on the synthesis of a blockbuster pharmaceutical drug using enantioselective organocatalysis. After completion of his studies, Sean transitioned to the medicinal chemistry department of Vernalis Research, an industry leader in fragment-based drug discovery. Over several years, he made significant contributions to successful projects in collaboration with major pharmaceutical partners. Subsequently, Sean returned to academia to pursue a PhD in chemical biology at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. During his doctoral research, he undertook a visiting position at Leiden University with Professor Sander van Kasteren, where he conducted photoaffinity labelling experiments in live cell models. Upon completion of his PhD, Sean rejoined Leiden University as a postdoctoral research scientist, working with Professor Laura Heitman, Dr. Sebastian Pomplun, and Professor Gerard van Westen as part of the Oncode Accelerator program. In this current role, he is utilising virtual screening and high-throughput synthesis to develop novel modulators for therapeutically relevant GPCR targets.
