Robert Vermeiren (Gent, 1968) is hoogleraar kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrie en hoofd van de subafdeling LUMC Curium. Daarnaast is hij hoofdonderzoeker bij de Parnassia Groep, Youz. Hij is actief lid van de Academische Werkplaats SAMEN en de Academische Werkplaats Risicojeugd, en lid van de Commissie Wetenschappelijke van de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Psychiatrie. In de Europese Vereniging voor Kinder- en Jeugdpsychiatrie is hij co-chair van de Policy Division.

Kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrie
De kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrie heeft de (disfunctionele) ontwikkeling van het kind als focus. Het richt zich hierbij op het samenspel van biopsychosociale factoren die bepalend zijn voor een geslaagde dan wel een ongewenste ontwikkeling. De mate waarin een kind erin slaagt zich in het gezin, sociaal en op school mee te kunnen, het functioneren, is hierin bepalend. Als een kind het op een of meerdere vlakken niet goed doet, dan vraagt het gezin hulp bij Vermeiren. Zijn specifieke expertise ligt op het vlak van ernstige mentale problemen bij jongeren.
Het voorbije decennium zijn mentale problemen bij jongeren in aantal en ernst toegenomen, wat maakt dat de kinderpsychiatrie voor grote uitdagingen staat. Om deze aan te gaan is een innovatieve praktijkgerichte aanpak noodzakelijk. Tot de speerpunten van Vermeiren hoort participatie van betrokkenen (jongeren, ouders en professionals) en de nadruk op methodes die de praktijk leren kennen (benutten van klinische data en kwalitatief onderzoek).
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Prof. Vermeiren volgde zijn geneeskundeopleiding aan de Universiteit Gent, waarna hij zich bekwaamde tot kinder- en jeugdpsychiater aan het Universitair Centrum Kinder- en Jeugdpsychiatrie te Antwerpen (UCKJA). Hij promoveerde aldaar (2001) op een onderzoek bij jongeren die in contact waren gekomen met de jeugdrechtbank Antwerpen. In het kader van zijn onderzoek spendeerde hij een jaar fellowship aan het Yale Child Study Center (New haven, VS). Vanaf 2002 was hij UD/UHD bij de afdeling kinderpsychiatrie van het VUMC, alwaar hij hoogleraar forensische kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrie werd in 2006 (tot 2017). Tussendoor bekleedde hij (2004-2007) de bijzondere leerstoel forensische psychiatrie aan de Universiteit Leiden (faculteit rechten en criminologie).
De ontwikkelingspsychopathologie van ernstige mentale problemen (inclusief suïcidaal gedrag, zelfbeschadiging, eetstoornissen, …) bij jongeren is de onderzoeksfocus van prof. Vermeiren. Hij publiceerde in zijn wetenschappelijke carrière inmiddels meer dan 250 tal artikelen en een 20 tal boekhoofdstukken. In het onderzoek van Vermeiren ligt nadruk op relevantie voor de praktijk. Om die reden onderzoekt hij vooral klinische populaties, en richt hij zich zowel op kwantitatief als kwalitatief onderzoek. Met zijn betrokkenheid bij diverse Academische Werkplaatsen beoogt hij brug tussen praktijk, beleid en wetenschap te maken.
Prijzen en eervolle benoemingen
In 2017 werd de Academische Werkplaats Forensische Zorg voor Jeugd (thans Risicojeugd) bekroond met de ZonMW Parel. Tevoren ontving prof. Vermeiren meerdere prijzen voor zijn wetenschappelijk werk en een prestigieuze subsidie (Belgian American Educational Foundation - BAEF) voor zijn fellowship bij de Yale Child Study Center.
