Rizal Shidiq is universitair docent aan het Instituut voor Regiostudies van de Universiteit Leiden. Hij is econoom van oorsprong met als primaire gebieden ontwikkelingseconomie en monetaire theorie, en als secundair gebied publieke opinie. Zijn huidige onderzoeksonderwerpen zijn politieke connecties in ontwikkelingslanden, religieuze intolerantie en democratische kwetsbaarheden. Hij heeft uitgebreide kennis van de Indonesische economie en politiek.
