Endocrinologie
Patrick C.N. Rensen onderzoekt hoe verstoringen in de stofwisseling betrokken zijn bij de ontwikkeling van overgewicht, type 2 diabetes en type hart- en vaatziekten, met als doel die kennis te gebruiken voor het ontwikkelen van nieuwe therapieën om deze ziektes te voorkomen en te behandelen. Hiertoe wordt onderzocht wat de mechanismen zijn achter de werking van bruin vet, of de activiteit van bruin vet non-invasief in kaart kan worden gebracht, en wat de consequenties zijn van het activeren of vermeerderen van bruin vet voor de gezondheid. Specifiek wordt de rol van bijvoorbeeld DNA en eiwitten, de levensstijl, de biologische klok, de darmflora en het immuunsysteem in de functie van bruin vet bestudeerd. Hiermee sluit zijn onderzoek naadloos aan bij de thema’s ‘Gezondheidszorgonderzoek, preventie en behandeling’ en ‘Regeneratieve geneeskunde’ van de Nationale Wetenschapsagenda.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Rensen heeft zowel zijn opleiding Bio-Farmaceutische Wetenschappen als zijn promotieonderzoek cum laude afgerond aan de Universiteit van Leiden. De titel van zijn proefschrift (1997) luidt ‘Apolipoprotein E: a modulator of lipid metabolism with therapeutic potential in drug targeting and sepsis’. Na een korte periode als postdoctoraal onderzoeker startte hij als universitair docent bij het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum, aanvankelijk gedetacheerd bij TNO-Preventie en Gezondheid. Hij werd in maart 2012 benoemd tot hoogleraar Endocrinologie met als opdracht ‘Metabole aspecten van vasculaire ziekten’. De titel van zijn oratie is ‘Vet Kleurrijk’.
Rensen is internationaal bekend om zijn onderzoek naar de vet- en suikerstofwisseling in relatie tot cardiometabole ziekten. Hij is gevestigd onderzoeker van de Hartstichting, huidig voorzitter van de Europese Lipoproteïnen Club en editor van het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift ‘Atherosclerosis’. Hij heeft circa 250 wetenschappelijke publicaties op zijn naam staan, waaronder recente publicaties in Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology (2014), Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA (2015), Science Translational Medicine (2016) en Nature Communications (2015, 2017).
Prijzen en eervolle benoemingen
Rensen mocht diverse prijzen ontvangen waaronder de NVVG-MSD prijs 2012 van de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Vasculaire Geneeskunde, de Farmacologieprijs 2013 van deNederlandse Vereniging voor Farmacologie, een Lilly Research Award Program (LRAP) Award 2015, en de Prof. dr. G.J. Tammelingprijs 2016 voor beste docent van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum. Tevens was hij de eerste niet-Scandinaviër die de ‘Nikkilä Award 2016’ van de ‘Scandinavian Society for Atherosclerosis Research’ kreeg uitgereikt.
