Mitra Baratchi's onderzoeksinteresse ligt bij spatio-temporal time-series en mobility data modelling. Ze leidt de Spatio-temporal data Analysis and Reasoning (STAR) research groep en is lid van het interdisciplinaire onderzoeksprogramma Society, Artificial Intelligence and Life Sciences (SAILS). Haar onderzoeksinteresse ligt bij spatio-temporal time-series en mobility data modelling. Meer specifiek ontwerpt ze algoritmen die op een volledig geautomatiseerde manier patronen uit dergelijke data extraheren. Haar onderzoek richt zich op toepassingen in een breed scala van stedelijke, milieu- en industriële domeinen, waarvoor ze samenwerkt met met name de European Space Agency, Honda Research Institute, verschillende gemeenten en onderzoekers in andere wetenschappelijke disciplines.
Voordat ze bij Leiden kwam, werkte ze als postdoc-onderzoeker in de onderzoeksgroep Design and Analysis of Communication Systems aan de Universiteit Twente. Daarvoor was ze onderzoeker bij het lectoraat Ambient Intelligence van Saxion Hogeschool. In juni 2015 is zij gepromoveerd aan de Universiteit Twente.
