Marlies Reinders is hoogleraar Interne Geneeskunde en sinds 1 oktober 2024 Lid Raad van Bestuur van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC) en Decaan van de Faculteit Geneeskunde Universiteit Leiden.
Marlies Reinders is hoogleraar Interne Geneeskunde vanaf 2017. Zij werkte als Internist-Nefroloog in het LUMC (2009-2020) en het Erasmus MC (2020-2024). Van 2020-2024 was zij sectorhoofd van de Nefrologie en Niertransplantatie en voorzitter van het Erasmus MC Transplantatie Instituut (2023-2024). Vanaf 1 oktober 2024 is zij Lid Raad van Bestuur van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC) en Decaan van de Faculteit Geneeskunde Universiteit Leiden. Haar leerstoel richt zich op Interne Geneeskunde, innovatie in onderwijs en onderzoek.
Marlies Reinders was voorzitter van de Nederlandse Transplantatie Vereniging (2016-2021) en lid van de Eurotransplant Board en van de educatie commissies van de European Society of Transplantation (ESOT) en The Transplantation Society (TTS). Daarnaast was zij voorzitter van de European Cell Therapy and Organ Regeneration Section (ECTORS) van ESOT en co-voorzitter van de Leiden Teachers’ Academy (2019-2020) van de Universiteit Leiden.
Innovatie in onderwijs en onderzoek
Onderwijs, zorg en medisch-wetenschappelijk onderzoek zijn onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Activerend en onderzoekend leren zijn belangrijke thema’s waarbij de student niet alleen toeschouwer is, maar een actieve deelnemer. Het digitaal aanbieden van onderwijs, waaronder het integreren van technologische innovaties zoals een massive open online course en augmented en virtual reality kunnen het actief leren stimuleren. Haar onderzoek richt zich op innovaties als driver om het (transplantatie) onderwijs en onderzoek te verbeteren.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Marlies Reinders studeerde Geneeskunde in Groningen (RUG). In de periode 2000-2002 deed zij promotieonderzoek in Boston, Harvard Medical School op het gebied van de niertransplantatie, wat geleid heeft tot een promotie in Leiden in 2004 met als titel: Mechanistic and functional interrelationships between VEGF-induced angiogenesis, cell mediated immunity and allograft rejection. In Nederland heeft zij het onderzoek op het gebied van niertransplantatie voortgezet met als primair doel om sterfte op de wachtlijst voor nierpatiënten te voorkomen en om de overleving na niertransplantatie en de kwaliteit van leven te verbeteren. Zij heeft als principal investigator onder andere klinische trials opgezet met mesenchymale stromale cellen om littekenvorming in het niertransplantaat te verminderen. Daarnaast is zij mede oprichter van het landelijke RECOVAC consortium (REnal patients COvid-19 VACcination) om de werkzaamheid en veiligheid van SARS-CoV-2 vaccinaties te onderzoeken (www.recovac.nl). Zij heeft daarnaast verscheidene onderwijsinnovaties opgezet en onderzocht, waaronder een massive online open course (MOOC) over nier-, pancreas en eilandjestransplantaties (zie ook de trailer), de Leiden Oxford Transplantation Summer School (LOTS) en virtual en augmented reality applicaties over niertransplantatie. Voor het onderzoek heeft zij meerdere beurzen ontvangen (o.a. ZonMW Veni, ZonMW TAS, Leiden Teaching Academy, EU grant, Nierstichting en ZonMW Recovac consortium).
Prijzen en eervolle benoemingen
Marlies Reinders heeft verschillende beurzen ontvangen voor de implementatie van onderwijs innovaties waaronder de Leiden Teachers’ Academy beurs en de ICTO Innovatieprogramma beurs.
